Claves
Claves are part of the instrumentation that the composer Karl Orff used in his work
with children and amateur musicians. They are used to create a basic rythm. In Samba music for example they also can produce complicated rythm patterns.
To produce a good sound right handers can use the thumb and index finger of the left hand to hold one of the claves at the top quarter of one piece. The remaining three-quarters lay in the bent palm of the left hand creating a resonant space. The right hand then uses the second clave as a striker. Left handers should hold one clave in the right hand as indicated above and use the left hand to hold the striker.
